Linda and Frank have been seeing one another for six-and-a-half years. They met while enrolled in the same anthropology class at a relatively small, countryside, Church affiliated liberal arts college located in the Western part of the United States. While they were essentially good pals at first, they eventually started dating when they were in their first year of college.
Given the fact that both of them came from very conventional backgrounds, neither one of them drank very much social drinking stage when they first started to date. As the time went by, nonetheless, they began to go to more football bashes, sorority and fraternity parties, happy hours, and keg parties. As a result, they little by little began to drink increasingly more the longer they saw one another in a dating capacity.
After they graduated from college, they both got jobs in a small city that was about fifty-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally decided to move into the same apartment with one another.
With any substantial adjustment in an individual's life there is often something that activates the specific transformation in question. For Frank and Linda the thought of buying a new house and having children was this "mechanism of change." In a word, for the first time in their lives, Frank and Linda started to reflect on their abusive drinking and the long term adverse effects of alcohol on their health. As an illustration, they started to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their excessive drinking.
Would their heavy and irresponsible drinking adversely affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending nearly all of their money on drinking if they were to begin saving for a new house?
From a different perspective, although neither one of them ever suffered from alcohol poisoning, received a DWI arrest, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they realized that their heavy and irresponsible drinking was becoming an issue that they could not "sweep under the carpet" any longer. All of these uncertainties undeniably pointed to the same conclusion, namely that Linda and Frank needed to be more aware that they couldn't continue their heavy and irresponsible drinking if their goals, aspirations, and dreams were to be attained.
Once they settled upon this conclusion, they alerted their drinking buddies about their their marital plans, about their goal of buying or building a new house, and about their plans to start a family. They also told their drinking friends that they still wanted to hang around with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this moment forward so that they could start realizing their future plans, dreams, and hopes.
Shockingly, all of their buddies expressed relief because they too had been pondering the direction of their lives and concluded that their life-styles were totally centered around drinking. They also realized that they would have to change drastically if they were to become more accountable and show more forethought for their careers, their health, and for their plans in the next twenty or twenty-five years.
After their candid chat with their friends about their dreams, goals, and aspirations, Frank and Linda basically started to have more significant relationships with all of their friends. The primary reason for this was the fact that all of them had a similar perspective regarding their heavy and irresponsible drinking and their relatively short and long-term goals, plans, and aspirations.
