Ralph began drinking abusively when he was a junior in college. From a positive perspective, although he drank abusively when he was an adolescent and a young adult, when he got beyond the age of twenty-five he almost always drank in moderation.
After he completed his education he eventually got a job at a local food processing plant where he applied himself and worked his way up from stock person, to office assistant, to purchasing assistant, to purchasing manager. Unlike his other work positions, as the purchasing manager he repeatedly took potential vendors and existing vendors to lunch and to a variety of sporting events.
Though it was not an official part of his job description, meeting with existing vendors and potential vendors repeatedly involved circumstances in which alcohol was present. Indeed, over the past sixteen months, Ralph had begun to considerably increase his work related and his social drinking. This has resulted in quite a quandary. More specifically, the more successful he became as a purchasing agent, the more heavily he began to drink.
In fact, it did not take very long before Ralph's excessive and careless drinking started to adversely affect his relationships, the money in his savings account, his health, his mental health, and his work efficiency. After many weeks of excessive drinking, Ralph, as a matter of fact, started to get worried about his unhealthy and excessive drinking and wondered whether his alcohol related problems were alcoholism signs. To make things worse, his increasing bouts of depression also made him question whether he was becoming dependent on alcohol. In a word, Ralph obviously needed to learn more about the facts about alcohol abuse and the signs of alcoholism.
So Ralph used his common sense, called his physician, and made an appointment for a thorough physical examination. The next week when he saw his doctor, Ralph regrettably learned that he was alcohol dependent. His family doctor informed Ralph that he needed to get alcohol detox and alcohol treatment for his alcohol dependency and that he also needed to get a medical assessment regarding his depression. In short, Ralph needed treatment for his alcoholism and depression.
His doctor recommended to Ralph that he take a 30-day leave of absence from work and get admitted into a quality in-patient alcohol rehabilitation clinic where he could also be treated for his depression. This is precisely what Ralph did. The positive news is that after his treatment for alcohol dependency and for depression, he felt like a new person. Indeed, now that he was living an alcohol-free life he rarely got depressed and he now understood how to more successfully and productively manage his job, his health, his relationships, and his finances.
To no one's amazement, the biggest test Ralph came across was at the office. To be more specific, he still took his existing vendors and potential vendors to various sporting events and to lunch, but after his alcohol rehab he managed to stay away from drinking while entertaining his clients.
It can be emphasized that Ralph also learned that none of his existing vendors or potential vendors thought any less of him because of his alcohol-free lifestyle. Alternatively, he learned that his existing vendors and potential vendors respected him for maintaining his convictions.
After Ralph went through alcohol rehabilitation he learned that if he abstained from drinking, all of the other significant parts of his life would be enhanced. Every once-in-a-while, it can be pointed out, Ralph missed drinking, but the better finances, health, relationships, and the better work performance he experienced more than compensated for his craving for alcohol.
